FAMILIA FELIZ PROJECT, STARTED THE 10TH OF SEPTEMBER 2009, HAS BEEN SUCCESFULLY CLOSED AFTER COLLECTING 10687 EURO, WHICH IS MORE THAN WHAT WE NEEDED TO FINANCE ONE HOUSE TO BE BUILT. WORKS STARTED IN FEBRUARY 2010 AND ARE DUE TO BE FINISHED IN A FEW MONTHS.

THE HOUSE BUILT WILL GIVE SHELTER TO 8 KIDS AND A FOSTER FAMILY.

INTRODUCTION

Dear Traveler,

Thanks so much for dedicating your time to the reading of this page.

My name is Gionata Nencini, I’m 25 and since 2005 I have been riding into the world on a Honda Transalp made in 1987. Since I left Italy I have visited 27 countries, ridden 180000 km and touched 4 continents. Now I am in Bolivia, helping as a volunteer in an orphanage called Familia Feliz (Happy Family).

This page is dedicated to the orphans of Familia Feliz. The background stories that brought them here speak about sexual abuses and abandon from their own families.

I got at Familia Feliz the 27 of July 2009 and after almost two months spent here, I have realized how important this place is for the future kids to rescue and I have decided to personally donate in order to share with you this project I’ve called “2 Homes for Familia Feliz’s Orphans”.

All the money raised with this project will be invested to build 2 new houses where to home 16 orphans and 2 fosters families.

How much does it cost, in your country, to build a house and forniture it in order to house 10 persons?

FAMILIA FELIZ FOUNDER

Melissa Harding is 26 and is the founder or the orphanage Familia Feliz.

She got to Bolivia in 2005 as a volunteer and she got introduced to a poor family of 4 kids who needed somebody to help. Their mother was a terminal ill of cancer and died 1 week after Melissa had arrived. She then adopted her 4 kids at the age of 22.

Her necessity of starting a new life as an adopting mother, motivated her to start an orphanage. Thanks to the many donations from who believed in her project, today Familia Feliz home 35 kids and 18 volunteers.

It has 5 adopting/fosters families and 5 houses and also a school which provide the basic education for the kids and few external students.

Melissa, as today is an adopting mother of 7 and is responsible for 2 other kids which live with her.

Kids in need are many here in Bolivia, but Familia Feliz doesn’t have enough houses to home them all and rescue them from the street.

This is way of this page. To help Familia Feliz to grow and having two new houses built soon.

How much does it cost, in your country, to feed 53 people for a week?

FEATURED STORY: SARA

Sara is 14 and she is one of my best English students.

She got to Familia Feliz in 2007, presenting a voice problem which, after several medical checks and a surgery, revealed to be caused by a male genital warts in her throat. Familia Feliz then got to know that the girl had been sexually abused by her step father since the age of 6.

To cover medical costs and transportation to Santa Cruz hospital and all the other fee that the surgery needed to be paid for, was Familia Feliz and its donators (2000 USD).

Today Sara is an interested student and one of the most responsible kids at Familia Feliz.

Every Friday morning, with her class mates, we study English. It is a great pleasure to see her smile and answer my English questions.

How many times a day, in your country, have you drunk water from a river?

FEATURED STORY: ANGELO AND CLAUDIA

Angelo (12) and Claudia (9) are brothers.

Familia Feliz found them in the street, where they were totally abandoned to themselves and tried to live on a very low hygiene condition. They were malnourished and covered with their own excrements.

Before they had been left to the street, they used to live with their mother, the grandmother and their uncle. One night the man would get drunk and ask for money with a knofe in his hand. Angelo and Claudia’s mother would get stubbed to death in front of her children for trying to help her mother in law to get hurt.

After been taken away from their grandmother, Angelo and Claudia have been waiting the verdict of Defensoria Boliviana trying to live in the street.

Today Angelo and Claudia participate the school activities with interest and they also help a lot in the garden.

They share their interests with the volunteers and their class mate with joy and new vitality.

2 HOMES FOR FAMILIA FELIZ’S ORPHANS

Dear reader,

thanks so much for being interested in this Aid Project dedicated to Familia Feliz. I have been written this page directly from the orphanage, putting together all the informations given me by the directors and the volunteers willing to get these 2 HOUSES built.

I really hope these informations will be good enough and detailed enough for you to explain what we desire to accomplish.

HOUSE PREVIEW: this is one the house already existing.

HOUSE SURFACE: 6 mt x 13 mt = 78 m2 (each)

HOUSE HEIGHT: 6 mt(each)

HOUSE TO BE BUILT: 2

MONEY NEEDED: 10500 Euro + 10500 Euro = (15000 USD each)

TIME NEEDED TO BUILD: 2 months(each)

PEOPLE TO HOST: 8 kids + 2 parents (each)

ROOM TO BUILD: 4 rooms+ 2/3 bathrooms + 1 kitchen

MATERIALS AND QUANTITY: Preventivo

WATER SUPPLIED: Yes

POWER SUPPLOED: Yes (solar panels, solar batteries and 12 V system)

FACILITIES: No

FORNITURES: Yes (lbeds, bathroom, stoves and cooks)

The 2 houses we intend to build at Familia Feliz have a surface of 78 m2 each. Materials which the two houses are built with are available at the village of Rurrenabaque and the labor will be performed by us volunteers and few prepared laborer.

The chosen materials and the lack of many of our modern and urban details depend on the fact that this is a tropical place, which makes it a relatively dry and hot country. This allow us to optimize expenses and to build these two houses with all the furnitures in it at low cost.

Power is supplied by solar panels and batteries and distributes a 12V power in the rooms and bathrooms. There won’t be any need of investing money in a 110 or 220 V power system, as we don’t install facilities such as fridge, hot water tank, Tv and laundry machines.

The water in the bathroom and kitchen is provided naturally from the stream and it’s permanently cold. In the future, with your help, we would like to provide Familia Feliz ad independent filtered water system.

After considering about this Aid Project and the way to share it with you, I have received a lot of advice about the transparency of the donations, which represent what this project is fueled by for the construction of the two houses.

With founder Melissa’s help and the directors help too, it has been decided to let the people donate to a bank account designed to Familia Feliz which doesn’t involve third parties and that can handle the founds with more transparency.

Doing so and with the donators help, it will be possible for me to keep track of the donations here on this page by receiving from the donators a mail containing the amount of their donation and the date.

For the same matter of Transparency, the directors and Melissa will rely on Gospel Ministry’s paypal account to receive danations online.

How much does it cost, in your country, to build a house and forniture it in order to house 10 persons?

Costs may vary, due to the local currency and land cost, but here in Bolivia, with just 30000 USD or 22000 Euros, we can get 2 houses built and ready to host 20 people.

How much does it cost, in your country, to feed 53 people for a week?

53 people are just like 15 nuclear families. In Bolivia, at the orphanage, we feed 35 kids and 18 volunteers with just 200 Euros a weeks. Impressive, isn’t it?

How many times a day, in your country, have you drunk water from a river?

Where I live, rivers are so polluted that drinking their water with be a good way to die. Here in Bolivia, all the memebers of the orphanage get their daily and only water source from the river 7 km far from where we live. It is part of the deal to get sick from time to time and get some germs killing pills.

What do you do, in your country, if you don’t get water off the tub for 3 months in a row?

Personally I never had to deal with this in Italy, but I have heard of people not having water for more than 5 days. Here in Bolivia, at the orphanage, many summers have left us with no water to drink or wash or cook, forcing us to reach for water at the closest creek. So we collect water from the same place where we bath, we wash dishes and wash clothes. It is hard to live that way and 3 months in a row of it can cause a lor of health problems.
